Common Causes of Plumbing Leaks
You may be surprised to learn that there are several reasons why your plumbing system could be leaking, some of which are out of your control, but others are completely preventable.
The most common causes of residential leaks include:
- Clogs caused by accumulated matter – Your clogged drains are a major culprit when it comes to leaking pipes. Even though this drainage system is built to withstand contaminated water running through it, it was not designed to undergo the stress of foreign objects. When masses of hair, soap scum, toilet paper, and more cause a large clog, the surmounting pressure can burst the pipes.
- Corrosion or rust within your pipes – Even the most insulated forms of metal pipes are prone to suffer from corrosion after many years of use. Usually, this starts on account of your water’s acidity level. If the pH levels in your water are too high, the water will begin to eat away at the pipes from the inside out, causing small leaks.
- High levels of water pressure – This kind of problem is not one you can avoid since it occurs naturally. If you live in an area with tall trees, hills, and buildings, or even next to a fire hydrant, you are more prone to experience high water pressure. This pressure can overwhelm your pipes and cause small leaks.
Identifying a Leak on Your Property
One of the most frustrating things about a leak is that it can be difficult to pinpoint. In certain cases, you can make a general guess that you have a leak, simply by carefully examining your water meter. If you have a recent system, the meter will come with a special leak indicator symbol, which will alert you when a leak is present. However, this does not indicate exactly where the leak is occurring.
Even if you notice water dripping out of a section of pipe, this does not mean this is the precise location of the leak, or even that there is only one leak. Once you have figured out that you are likely suffering from a leak problem, speak to one of our knowledgeable techs at Bear’s Plumbing Services, so they can locate and resolve the issue.
